About Rwanda

Discover Rwanda - THE LAND OF THOUSAND HILLS

Affectionately known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” Rwanda is one of Africa’s most captivating and visually stunning destinations. Its breathtaking landscapes tell a story of extraordinary natural beauty — from the dramatic peaks of the Virunga Mountains and the lush depths of tropical rainforests, to the sweeping expanse of golden savanna grasslands and the serene, shimmering waters of Lake Kivu, the Kagera River, and Lake Ihema. Every corner of Rwanda is a landscape waiting to take your breath away.

Rwanda is a naturally blessed sanctuary, celebrated worldwide as one of the last remaining havens for the endangered mountain gorilla. Beyond these magnificent giants, the country is rich with diverse primate life — including chimpanzees and the rare and enchanting golden monkey — making it an unrivaled destination for primate enthusiasts and wildlife lovers alike.

Yet Rwanda’s wildlife story does not end with primates. The thriving ecosystems of Akagera National Park are home to Africa’s iconic Big Five — elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, and rhinos — offering a complete and exhilarating game viewing experience unlike any other. Beyond the wildlife, Rwanda captivates with its dramatic mountain hiking trails, profound and moving history, and deeply enriching community-based experiences that connect travelers to the heart and soul of this remarkable nation.

Rwanda is not just a destination — it is an experience that stays with you forever.

Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park is one of Africa’s most iconic and emotionally stirring destinations — a chain of ancient, forest-cloaked volcanoes straddling the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Home to several habituated mountain gorilla families, this is where Dian Fossey dedicated her life to protecting these magnificent creatures, and where travellers today follow in her footsteps through dense bamboo forest to experience the most profound wildlife encounter on earth. Volcanoes is also the only place in Africa to track the rare and dazzling golden monkey. Breathtaking, moving, and utterly unforgettable, Volcanoes National Park is the crown jewel of Rwanda — and one of the greatest wildlife destinations in the world.

Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of Africa’s oldest and most biodiverse montane rainforests — a vast, ancient, and hauntingly beautiful wilderness that has remained largely intact for over a million years. Home to 13 primate species including habituated chimpanzees and the striking Angolan colobus monkey, as well as over 300 bird species, Nyungwe is a paradise for nature lovers and serious wildlife enthusiasts alike. Its famous canopy walkway, suspended high above the forest floor, offers a breathtaking bird’s-eye view of the jungle canopy that few experiences in Africa can rival. Wild, lush, and deeply atmospheric, Nyungwe is Rwanda at its most primeval and magnificent.

Akagera national park

Stretching along Rwanda’s eastern border with Tanzania, Akagera National Park is one of Africa’s great conservation success stories — a vast savannah wilderness of open plains, papyrus swamps, and glittering lakes that was once devastated by conflict and poaching, and has since been restored to breathtaking abundance. Today, Akagera is home to the Big Five, including lions and black rhinos reintroduced after decades of absence, alongside elephants, hippos, zebras, giraffes, and over 500 bird species. Game drives across its sweeping grasslands and boat cruises along Lake Ihema deliver a classic East African safari experience that feels all the more remarkable given how far this park has come. Akagera is living proof that nature, given the chance, will always find its way back.

Gishwati Mukura national park

Gishwati-Mukura is a remarkable story of rebirth — a fragmented montane forest that was almost entirely destroyed during the 1994 genocide and its aftermath, and has since been painstakingly restored through one of Africa’s most inspiring conservation and community recovery programmes. Today, the forest is home to habituated chimpanzees, golden monkeys, colobus monkeys, and a growing array of bird species, offering intimate and genuinely off-the-beaten-path wildlife encounters far from the crowds. Small in size but enormous in significance, Gishwati-Mukura is a symbol of Rwanda’s extraordinary resilience — a country and a forest healing together, one tree at a time.

Africa’s most beautiful Lake kivu

Lake Kivu is one of Africa’s most strikingly beautiful and captivating bodies of water — a vast, deep, island-dotted lake cradled between dramatic volcanic hills that tumble steeply into its glittering blue waters. Stretching over 2,700 square kilometres at an altitude of 1,460 metres above sea level, Kivu is one of Africa’s Great Lakes, and one of its most scenically breathtaking. The lakeside town of Gisenyi in the north and the elegant resort town of Kibuye in the south offer a wonderfully relaxed pace of life — waterfront lodges, fresh fish restaurants, kayaking, boat trips to quiet forested islands, and sunsets that paint the water in extraordinary shades of gold and amber.

Kibeho Pilgrimage

Nestled in the remote hills of southern Rwanda, Kibeho is one of the most sacred destinations in Africa — a small, humble town that rose to global prominence following a series of apparitions of the Virgin Mary reported by young schoolgirls between 1981 and 1989, officially approved by the Catholic Church in 2001 and making Kibeho the only Vatican-recognised Marian apparition site on the African continent. Every year, tens of thousands of pilgrims from across the world make the journey to the Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows to pray, reflect, and seek healing in a place of profound peace and extraordinary spiritual power. For pilgrims and travellers alike, Kibeho is an experience that reaches far beyond religion — touching something deep, universal, and unforgettable in the human spirit.
